Performa 10 Years
Celebrating Performa's 10 year anniversary, Performa Magazine reflects on the organization's storied legacy and history, beginning with its first biennials: Performa 05 and Performa 07.
The seeds of these biennials were planted as early as 2001, when Performa's Founding Director and Curator RoseLee Goldberg asked Iranian artist Shirin Neshat, who works primarily in film, video, and photography, to "envisage her performers on screen stepping down from the walls into a live performance space." The result was Logic of the Birds which premiered the following year at the Lincoln Center Festival. The biennial was born out of a desire enliven the work of incredible visual artsts and create experiential pieces that inhabit the same physical environments as their audience.
