Performa 15 welcomes the return of acclaimed French conceptual choreographer Jérôme Bel with a bold new work specially devised for the city of New York unfolding over the course of the biennial’s three weeks and presented in three separate venues: a downtown dance studio (Martha Graham Studio Theater), midtown art gallery (Marian Goodman Gallery), and uptown theater (at El Museo del Barrio).
Ballet (New York) plays with how these environments each frame and shape the ways we see and "feel" dance. For this new piece, Bel works with a community of trained and untrained New York-based performers of various ages and backgrounds and instructs them through a series of tasks to which they respond. Ballet (New York) treads the fine line between the banal and the theatrical, as the motley ensemble explores their relationships to each other but also to our own fantasies of what dance can be.
For the final performance at El Museo del Barrio, Ballet (New York) will be preceded by Slideshow, a new image-based work by Bel exploring the setting of the theater.
